Merman philosophy

Every human can choose to go with a flow or not. This installation is dedicated to people who lost their way in the life and people who deliberately choose their path, sometimes wrong and challenging but still leading them to the future. At this point on the playa, we want all the people thought about their life.

All of us can always choose how to act: try to swim in dust and imagine that thousands of years ago it was a lake, or be in the present moment - in the middle of the dry desert with no water at all. Which way is better? Which way is leading us to something new and beautiful? Faster and with less pain? This human figure is metaphoric and can represent both: a single person or a group of people who are “stuck” in a situation, conflict or problem, relying on the past and not willing to look in the face of unpredictable but inevitable future.

Who is Merman?

Physical Description

The art-piece is a wooden sculpture of a half visible swimmer. There are only his back, head and an arm "outside" of a playa surface. During a dust storm it will look like a person "swims" in dust. Art will consist of laser-cut wooden panels, with 2,75 inches gaps between this panels. Metal tube frames will be placed inside the main form as a frame and the arm will be reinforced by a metal truss to keep it stable and safe. The whole sculpture will be mostly solid and hollow inside.

There is only wood and metal used in the constructoin, which consists of smaller parts connected to ech other by screw-bolts. All technical elemets as a generator, lightening etc., gonna be placed inside of the structure, so it will be safe and look neat and minimalistic. It is massive and simple at the same time, the shape is soft and very smooth. The figure will be illuminated from the inside by bright white LED lights at night time.

Interactivity

The installation can be used as a big bench or a sunbed by several people at the time. It also will give some shade during the day time, so Playa travelers can hide and chill around the sculpture hiding from the sun's heat. There will be ergonomic notches placed in the back part for rest. Participants can climb any part of the figure, and hang on the highest element - the swimmer's hand. We will add special hidden handles to a swimmer's hand plywood panels for more usability and safety.

Leave No Trace Plan

1

Installation

As already mentioned before - the structure consists of metal+ laser cutted plywood modules. We plan to prepare all modules in Ukraine and ship them to BRC. So in the desert, we will assemble already prepared parts to one piece as a huge constructor. There no welding, cutting, grinding, drilling planned to do on the Playa, but just screw-bolts twisting. All plywood edges will be polished before arriving at Playa too. We won't have any small elements or fragile materials in the construction, so they can become MOOP.

2

Rules

For a generator and whires, we will use pallets. We have a Leave No Trace responsible in the team and going to aapoint everyday hourly shifts for team members, who will inspect and clean (if needed) the territory around the art during the preparation, main event and after event periods.

3

Disassembling

The disassembling of the sculpture works the same way - we are going to unscrew the bolts between the blocks and load them in a truck one by one. This does not require cutting, drilling or other additional actions.  The disassembling team will have all tools to clean up the territory after the event: magnetic rakes, rakes, sieves.

Our badass team

The team members are experienced burners who took part in different local and BRC projects.
